Mid-west, genre-defying legends make their Ithaca debut... from their gnarled early 7"s and "First There Was The Emptiness" debut LP, to modern underground staples like "In the Grips of the Light" and the rock-opera "Satan's Kickin' Yr Dick" (which is probably the only album ever that I have to listen to at least one track from every month), to their recent resurgence with 2008's "Acid or Blood" and last year's "Six Sik Sisters"; there is no band like the blood soaked, unhinged insanity that is Racebannon.
Long known for their sanity-splintering releases for labels such as Level Plane, Secretly Canadian and Southern and collaborations with some of Earth's most extreme musicians (such as MERZBOW), their latest, " Six Sik Sisters" delivers nine soul-withering waves of sonically barbaric extreme music and finds the band at their hungriest, heaviest, and most venomous. The album's tempos surge to both the fastest and downright burliest in Racebannon's 15 year history with impetuous results: warped speed-metal riffs colliding with Sabbath-esque knuckle-drag alongside breakneck drumming that falls only a tad short of grindcore.
Indie rock? No. Metal? No. Hardcore? No. Noise-core? No. Racebannon? Yes. It really is that simple. Hesh enough for any pit, yet cerebral enough for the art palate, Racebannon attack with the heave and punch the endtimes dictate while still keeping things fresh and original. Love or hate, there is no ignoring the 12 gauge barrage of riffs, screams, and drums.
Here's some words from AP, Decibel, Pitchfork and more:
"Racebannon claw through avant-hardcore like a pack of rabid mice through cheese-flavored poison, sputtering and cranking the guitars, sound-effects and thunderous white noise..." - Alternative Press
"... a total genre gangbang with metal, hardcore, sludge and art-rock all getting chances to unload...with drums like a zombie pounding on your roof, and guitar sounds that are either caterwauls of feedback or riffs heavy enough to sting your gums." - Decibel
"The brutality of their music represents a deep-seated resistance to conformity and mental decay. Their precision, jaw-dropping "Jesus Lizard from the future" vibes remind the observer that the very desires to create languid mental conditions and conformity fuel only the inverse." - Redefine Magazine
"Racebannon embeds the vocals in dense, grinding sheets of cacophony. Monstrous drums and guitar stomp through the songs, from chords like waves smashing beach houses...and a little of what a preacher might call the "steel wheels of Lucifer": records played either backwards or slowed to a warped pitch like the voice of the dark master. Racebannon sticks your head right into the noise, just as their words pull you through the bowels of fame, lust and desire." - Pitchfork
Cattle Drums return to Ithaca! We're talking technically complex punk/hardcore right here. We had such a blast with them at the fundraiser show (as always) we had to get them back ASAP. The skinny for those unfamiliar is below.
Remember when indie music was wild and unpredictable? Remember when bands were hard to pigeonhole into neat little sub-genres? Well, Cattle Drums will remind you if you have forgotten. Hailing from upstate NY, you might shrug your shoulders at a band named Cattle Drums but you would be remiss by doing so. Mixing post-punk, emo/hardcore, shards of math rock and even traces of dark Americana, Cattle Drums distinguish themselves as purveyors of a sound not yet recognizable to our pampered, innocent ears. Lyrically ambiguous and instrumentally ambitious with harsh, aggressive tones, Cattle Drums truly are a wild awakening for the senses. These songs truly defy classification and open the listener up to create their own unique interpretation of the Cattle Drums sound. Need a shock to the system to break you from the mundane of the daily grind? Delve into the madness of the Cattle Drums experience and witness a band operating only by their keen sense of artistic expression. Eccentric and chaotic yet always melodic and intoxicating, Cattle Drums are kicking up dust and noise unlike anybody else right now. Just imagine what is yet to come.
HI DONNA HERE (aka DONNA)
The return of DONNA! That's right, for a very brief time, the Balles brothers are back in action. Brother Kyle (drummer / Blot Spot mastermind) moved to Austin, TX last year which, understandably, put the kibosh on live performances. As it turns out, he'll be flying back in to the northeast this very night so, why not pick right up where we left off?
These two create a mostly instrumental mix of psych, noise, improve and rock swirl together with thunderous drums and searing guitar and effects. They've performed with the likes of Kayo Dot, Zach Hill, Cheer Accident Total and tons more. Total Guffy. Chunky. 69? I have no idea what I'm doing.
