Cobra Skulls were hatched back in 2005 in the seedy, sweltering snakepit that is Reno, Nevada. Before we go any further, stop and think for a second: what kind of punk rock band comes outta Reno? Terrifying, right? They started out as three friends who met at the University of Nevada and wanted to play music just for fun. For some members it was their first time in a band or even playing an instrument, but that didn’t hold the young trio back in the least bit. Right away Cobra Skulls were packing basements, house shows, warehouses, coffee shops… basically anywhere and everywhere in Reno.

But any band worth their salt is gonna aspire to take their music beyond their own little scene—even if it is “The Biggest Little City In The World”—and it wasn’t long before Cobra Skulls were sweeping into neighboring towns like a desert dust storm. It was at about that time that they hooked up with the punk label, Red Scare Industries, who spotted the young band at a show in San Francisco. What resulted was the release of their debut LP, 'Sitting Army', which set big things into motion for the band. They were an immediate hit with punk rockers and the record was a true breakout, but some didn’t know what to make of this band with a weird name from a weird place. People were anxious to apply a label and reference point to Cobra Skulls: “They’re Rockabilly” or “Is this folk-punk?” or “Reminds me of the Misfits”, and so on. Fact is, Cobra Skulls are a dynamic band that draw from myriad places to make up their quirky patchwork brand of punk rock.

Maybe more important than their diverse sound is the band’s urgent message. While many left-leaning bands take aim at the usual suspects like the Bush Administration or rapacious oil companies, absolutely no one is safe from Cobra Skulls. These guys are pissed. Seriously pissed; and they don’t adhere to any party, “side”, or demagogue either. All their scathing social commentary is likely the result of bilingual frontman Devin Peralta being a first generation Argentinean-American who has been publicly tackling social issues since his days writing for a Spanish-speaking newspaper in Nevada. The topic of immigration is one that is addressed even on their Fat Wreck debut EP, “ICE in the Night”, which tells the frightful story of a personal friend who was essentially kidnapped by the Feds in the middle of the night.

If you somehow missed the first two times we had the Skulls through in '07 and '09 or just haven't heard of them under your rock, the band has toured Europe twice, toured North America continuously with bands like Against Me!, the World/Inferno Friendship Society, Teenage Bottlerocket, The Menzingers, Broadway Calls, The Loved Ones, Dead To Me, tons more and have shared stages with Fat Wreck heavyweights like NOFX and Me First and the Gimme Gimmes plus appearances at The Fest in Gainesville, CMJ in NY, and other fests.

We look forward to our good pals next LP 'Agitations', coming September 27th, and their third performance in Ithaca, NY.

New, exciting punk from San Fran whose last two releases came out on BYO and their next will be through Red Scare. Oh, need more info? Ok fine...

Nothington was formed in 2006 when longtime tour mates and friends, Jay Northington (guitar) and Gabe Lindeman (drums) decided to start playing music together again in an old dusty wood shop in the San Francisco Bay Area. Soon after hearing the first four songs they had recorded together, Matulich joined the band to add in his two cents of influence to the album that eventually became “All In,” which was released by legendary BYO Records in 2007. After a few bass players decided to go their own ways, Nothington finally secured the talented bass player and longtime friend of the band, Mitch Paglia for future recordings.

Nothington came into their own in 2009 with the release of “Roads, Bridges and Ruins.” This record proved that the band could pretty much do anything they wanted within the genre of punk rock, as this record was more aggressive and more diverse than the first one. As with any struggling young band, the realities and challenges of life on the road, unpaid bills, and shaky relationships were becoming increasingly troublesome, and you can not only hear it, but you can feel it in each song. Since RBR was so well received by old fans and new alike, the band toured long and hard throughout 2010, with five tours in the US and two European tours taking up over 8 months in one year.

Tracks from their latest EP "More Than Obvious" released July 12, 2011 is streaming now on Punknews.org:

BOMBTREE

Starting life as The Berettas, the trio of Josh Burns, Sean Burns, and Mike Warren quickly became a part of the re-emerging Ithaca punk scene in the mid-00s, wearing influences like The Clash, The Queers, and NOFX on their sleeves. The band continues to deliver high-energy live performances (usually with some amount of guitar blood) and mature their sound. They've been involved with IU from the start and have performed with the likes of The Menzingers, Such Gold, Sakes Alive!!, Burning Streets, as well as all the great acts at this year's IU Ithaca Fest stage.

THE DIRTY SLITS

Back in Ithaca after a solid set at The Space in July, TDS is a fantastic mix of old-school punk with a hint of thrash. Real dudes from Binghamton who have spent time (or still do spend time) in The Serlingtons, Sepsis, These Machines, Canerface and more. We've been handing out their debut at IU shows this summer so hopefully you were one of the lucky ones to get your mits on it.
